Habit 1, Be Proactive!

In September I will be visiting classrooms to talk with students about "Habit 1--Be Proactive" and how we treat one another with respect at school. In addition, this year I will be "showcasing" a grade level each month on my Leadership bulletin board. This bulletin board will focus on leadership qualities students are learning through my guidance lessons.

4th graders are my Leadership Spotlight this month! We read The Juice Box Bully and identified proactive language throughout the book, especially in a promise that students in the book made regarding how they would respond to other's unkind behavior.

I taught students a leadership skill "Stop and Think" to help them learn to be proactive when responding to a situation that causes them anger, frustration, or another difficult emotion. Students brainstormed ways to "stop and think" before responding to different situations, and worked in groups to apply this strategy to different scenarios I provided them.

Next week I will begin with 3rd grade to discuss "choosing your weather" and being proactive by being in control of themselves in all situations, so check back to hear more about that lesson as well as lessons in other grades!

Welcome Back!

I wanted to take a moment to welcome our Highland Park families to what should be a very exciting 2013-2014 school year! I am looking forward to seeing many families tonight at Meet the Teacher. I am also very much looking forward to seeing all of our students on the first day this Wednesday!

District Offers No-Cost Summer Meal Program

Please see information below from Janice Phelan regarding a new summer meal program offered at no cost to Lee's Summit R-7 students!

STUDENTS INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN NO-COST SUMMER MEAL PROGRAM

New federally-funded program offered through Lee's Summit R-7 School District:

All Lee's Summit R-7 area students are invited to participate in a no-cost summer meal program. Both breakfast and lunch will be served weekdays from June 3 through June 28 at Meadow Lane Elementary School, 1421 NE Independence Ave. Meals are served in the school cafeteria, which can be accessed from the east entrance, off the playground.

To participate, students must be age 18 or younger. Meals are served at the school, and no transportation is provided for students participating. Breakfast will be offered from 8 to 9 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekdays.

The program is coordinated by the Lee's Summit R-7 Nutrition Services Department and is federally funded. For more information, contact R-7 Nutrition Services, (816) 986-2200.
